Nigerian singer Temilade Openiyi, better known as Tems, has shared her thoughts on receiving proper recognition for her part in the global hit Essence.
In a recent Instagram story, Tems expressed her love for Wizkid, while noting that her role as a songwriter on the record should be acknowledged. According to her, the song touched lives across the world, but it’s important to remember everyone who helped bring it to life.
Released in 2020, Essence — a collaboration between Wizkid and Tems — became one of the most celebrated African songs to break international boundaries.
Tems made it clear that her message wasn’t directed at Wizkid himself, but at some of his fans who tend to overlook her creative input.
She wrote, “They keep saying Essence changed lives, true — but let’s not forget who wrote it. Love Wiz, but his fans be moving mad sometimes.”
Meanwhile, fellow singer Seyi Shay has also opened up about her personal life, revealing why she couldn’t marry the father of her daughter.
Seyi Shay, who welcomed her first child in 2022, shared during an interview with Chude Jideonwo on the WithChude podcast that her daughter’s father remains a very special person in her life, even though marriage wasn’t part of their journey.
