The Benue State House of Assembly has handed a six-month suspension to four of its members following an alleged move to remove Speaker Aondona Dajoh.
The lawmakers affected are Alfred Berger (Makurdi North), Terna Shimawua (Kian), Cyril Ekong (Obi), and James Umoru (Apa).
According to the Assembly’s leadership, the suspension came after what it described as a failed attempt to unseat the Speaker late Thursday night. The action of the lawmakers was tagged as a challenge to the authority and order of the House.
Announcing the decision, the Assembly stated that the four members would be barred from legislative activities for the next six months as part of disciplinary measures.
The development has stirred tension within the House, with the leadership maintaining that it will not allow actions that could threaten its stability.
