Liverpool is mourning the heartbreaking loss of Diogo Jota and his brother, Andre, who tragically passed away in a car crash in Spain.
The accident occurred just after midnight in the Zamora region, where local police say the car veered off the road and caught fire.
Jota, 28, had only recently married his longtime partner, Rute Cardoso, on June 22. Together, they shared the joy of raising three children. What should have been the beginning of a beautiful new chapter has now been struck by unimaginable sorrow.
In a statement, the club shared, “We are heartbroken by the news of Diogo Jota’s passing. He and his brother Andre were taken far too soon. Our thoughts are with their loved ones during this incredibly difficult time.”
Liverpool also asked for privacy on behalf of the family and noted they would continue to support those affected by the tragedy.
Outside Anfield, supporters have begun laying flowers, scarves, and handwritten messages—an outpouring of grief and love for a player who meant so much to so many.
Jota was a familiar face on the field for Portugal, having earned 49 caps. Before joining Liverpool, he made his mark at Atletico Madrid, Porto, and Wolverhampton. His move to Liverpool in 2020 came with high hopes, and he didn’t disappoint.
He scored 65 goals during his time with the club and played a key role in their League Cup and FA Cup victories during the 2021/22 season.
Now, instead of cheering his next goal, the football world is left to remember a life filled with talent, drive, and warmth—gone too soon.
