Oba Sikiru Adetona to Be Laid to Rest in Ijebu-Ode Today
The Ogun State Government has announced that the late Awujale of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, will be buried today, Tuesday, at 4:00 p.m.
According to a statement by the Secretary to the State Government, Tokunbo Talabi, the revered monarch will be laid to rest at his Ogbagba Court residence in Igbeba, Ijebu-Ode.
The government also called on residents to keep the monarch’s family in their thoughts and prayers during this period of mourning.
Oba Adetona, who passed away on Sunday, July 13, at the age of 91, was one of Nigeria’s longest-serving traditional rulers. He ascended the throne in 1960 and was a respected figure not only among the Yoruba people but across the nation.
His death occurred just hours after the passing of former President Muhammadu Buhari, who also died on Sunday following a prolonged illness.
Meanwhile, Vice President Kashim Shettima and Chief of Staff Femi Gbajabiamila have arrived in London to oversee arrangements for Buhari’s return to Nigeria. Acting on President Bola Tinubu’s directive, the delegation was received by Foreign Affairs Minister Yusuf Tuggar and Borno State Governor Babagana Zulum.
In honour of the former president, President Tinubu has ordered that national flags be flown at half-mast for seven days. A special Federal Executive Council meeting has also been scheduled for Tuesday.
The Vice President is expected to accompany Buhari’s remains to Daura, Katsina State, where the late leader will be buried in accordance with Islamic traditions.
