Nollywood icon Okechukwu Anthony Onyegbule, popularly known as Okey Bakassi, has stepped into a new chapter of leadership as he becomes the traditional ruler of Umuihuocha Obohia Autonomous Community in Ahiazu Mbaise, Imo State.
The celebrated comedian and actor shared the news on his Instagram page, expressing gratitude to his community with the words:
“Special thanks to the entire Umuihuocha Autonomous Community…. a new beginning.”
Now officially recognized as His Royal Highness, Eze Okechukwu Onyegbule, OKWE II of Umuihuocha Obohia, he becomes the second monarch to hold the revered OKWE title.
Located in the heart of Mbaise, Umuihuocha is a community deeply rooted in cultural heritage and unity. The coronation of Okey Bakassi not only marks a proud moment for his people but also signals a significant shift from his decades-long career in the entertainment world to a role of cultural leadership.
While it’s still unclear how this new role might influence his outspoken views on national matters, Okey Bakassi has long used his platform to comment on political and social issues. He recently voiced concerns about the political climate, warning against unchecked power and urging citizens to stay engaged.
His coronation blends tradition with modern influence — a transition that will be closely watched both by fans of his work and those who now look to him as a community leader.
