Ghanaian Citizen Petitions President Mahama to Remove EC Chair and Deputies
Daniel Ofosu-Appiah, a concerned citizen from the Volta Region, has called on President John Mahama to remove Electoral Commission (EC) Chairperson Jean Mensa and her deputies. He cites alleged constitutional breaches and a loss of public confidence in the commission’s leadership.
In a petition dated January 27, 2025, Ofosu-Appiah argues that their actions have undermined trust in Ghana’s electoral system. He references violations of key constitutional provisions, including Articles 23, 42, and 296 of the 1992 Constitution.
One major issue raised is the exclusion of residents from Santrokofi, Akpafu, Likpe, and Lolobi (SALL) from participating in the 2020 parliamentary elections—an action he claims was unconstitutional. Additionally, concerns about how election results were handled and suspicions of bias within the EC further fuel his request.
He urges the President to invoke Article 146 to begin the process of removing the officials, stressing the need to restore faith in the electoral process. As of now, the presidency has yet to issue an official response.
