The Super Eagles of Nigeria have finally landed safely in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, after a tense midair emergency disrupted their return flight from Polokwane, South Africa.
The team, who were expected to arrive on Saturday, touched down around 8:05 a.m. on Sunday, following a dramatic delay caused by a technical issue that forced their chartered Value Jet aircraft to make an emergency return to Luanda, Angola.
According to reports, the flight had stopped in Luanda to refuel before heading to Uyo. However, just about twenty-five minutes after takeoff, the pilot was forced to turn back when a loud crack appeared on the plane’s windshield.
What started as a routine journey quickly became nerve-racking. Players, coaches, and officials on board reportedly remained composed as the pilot skillfully returned the aircraft to Luanda, where everyone disembarked safely while the airline arranged for another flight.
Thankfully, the team completed the rest of their journey without further incident.
The Super Eagles are now preparing to face Benin Republic on Tuesday in a decisive 2026 World Cup qualifier. The game is crucial for Nigeria, whose qualification hopes are still alive after their 2–1 victory over Lesotho in Polokwane on Friday.
Captain William Troost-Ekong and newcomer Akor Adams scored the vital goals that secured the win, though a late error by goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali allowed Lesotho to pull one back — keeping fans anxious until the final whistle.
That win moved Nigeria to third place in Group C with 14 points, just one behind South Africa and three behind leaders Benin Republic. For the Super Eagles to secure automatic qualification, they must not only defeat Benin but also hope South Africa drop points against Rwanda in Mbombela.
Meanwhile, South Africa were held to a goalless draw by Zimbabwe in Durban, while Benin narrowly beat Rwanda 1–0, setting the stage for a thrilling final round of matches on Tuesday.
Despite the turbulence in the air, the Super Eagles now have their feet firmly back on the ground — ready to fight for a ticket to the World Cup.
