In a surprising turn of events, Nobel laureate Professor Wole Soyinka has hinted at possibly reapplying for his US green card following former President Donald Trump’s recent conviction. Trump was found guilty on May 30 of all 34 charges related to falsifying business records to cover up a payment intended to silence adult film star Stormy Daniels.
Back in 2016, Soyinka had famously vowed to destroy his US green card if Trump won the presidential election. True to his word, he did so after Trump’s victory over Hillary Clinton, which led to Trump becoming the 45th President of the United States.

Trump’s attempt to secure reelection in 2020 failed when Joe Biden defeated him. Since then, Trump has faced several legal issues, culminating in his recent conviction.
Reflecting on the conviction, Soyinka mentioned he might consider reapplying for his green card. “Seeing that this personal gesture attracted such attention at the time, let me answer the question before it is asked: Yes, I may choose to apply for restoration of my card of Permanent Residence, known as the Green Card. Possibly,” he stated, as reported by Channels TV.
Soyinka also described Trump’s conviction as a “daybreak on a new democratic promise,” calling it a “clear warning” that the “clamor for equity breaks down the stoutest gates on guard across the citadel of impunity.”
