Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has expressed his desire to connect with U.S. President-elect Donald Trump on a personal level, hoping to gain his support against Russian aggression.
Speaking in Brussels, Zelensky shared his thoughts about Trump’s upcoming inauguration, saying, “Welcome Donald! What can I say? I believe President Trump is a strong leader, and I truly hope he’ll stand with us.”
Zelensky emphasized the importance of dialogue, stating, “I want the chance to talk, to understand his perspective, and to share ours. At the end of the day, we’re all human, with shared emotions and values.”
The Ukrainian leader didn’t mince words about Russian President Vladimir Putin, whom he described as “dangerous” and “driven by a desire to kill.” Zelensky warned that any ceasefire that allows Russia time to regroup would be a mistake. “Imagine Putin returning in two months, six months, or even two years. Who loses then? Everyone,” he said, urging for a strong and decisive plan.
Zelensky has consistently called for robust security assurances from NATO and increased military support to secure lasting peace. However, he stressed that European backing alone would not suffice and that the United States must play a pivotal role in any agreement.
The Ukrainian president remains hopeful that Trump will understand the stakes and stand firm in support of Ukraine’s fight for sovereignty and stability.
