Chimamanda Adichie Speaks Her Truth on Motherhood and Breaking the Silence Around Fertility
Celebrated writer Chimamanda Adichie recently shared a deeply personal chapter of her life—one that touched on motherhood, vulnerability, and the courage it takes to speak openly.
In a heartfelt conversation on the debut live edition of the #WithChude show, Chimamanda opened up about becoming a mother of twins through surrogacy, and why she felt it was important to tell her story.
“I knew that if I didn’t explain, people would start using my experience to pressure other women,” she said. “The last thing I want is for someone to say, ‘Chimamanda had babies at 47—why haven’t you?’”
The acclaimed author, known for her sharp insight and fearless honesty, spoke about the heavy burden society places on women struggling with fertility. “There’s too much shame,” she said. “Shame when women have fibroids. Shame when they can’t conceive easily. And I just don’t believe we should carry that.”

Though she admitted feeling a moment of hesitation after revealing the story behind her sons’ birth, Chimamanda stood by her decision. “My boys are so precious. Part of me thought, maybe I shouldn’t have shared it. But I won’t lie about how they came into the world. And if it helps someone else feel seen or less alone—then it was worth it.”
She also touched on her desire to protect her children from the spotlight. “Their lives are theirs,” she said, adding that most people didn’t even know she got married back in 2019. “That’s how I like it—quiet and private.”
Despite receiving some negative reactions online, Chimamanda remains at peace with her choices. “My daughter, my boys—they are everything to me. I have no regrets.”
With calm clarity, she used the platform to call for more empathy in how society treats women. “We need to stop judging people for how or when they start families. It’s nobody’s business but their own.”
