The National Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) has called for a seven-day warning strike to push for the release of Dr. Ganiyat Popoola, a fellow doctor who has been in captivity for over eight months.
According to reports, NARD President Dr. Dele Abdullahi announced that the strike would begin at midnight on Monday, August 26, 2024. The decision came after an emergency virtual meeting held by the National Executive Council on Sunday, August 25.
During the strike, all medical services, including emergency care, will be suspended.
Dr. Popoola, who works in the Ophthalmology Department at the National Eye Centre in Kaduna, was abducted along with her husband and nephew. While her husband was freed in March, Dr. Popoola and her nephew remain in captivity.
In recent weeks, NARD members have been protesting across various tertiary hospitals in the country, urging for Dr. Popoola’s immediate release.
