“Live Wire: Long-Winded Short Pieces,” a book by the well-known host of a daytime talk show, will be released soon, and one of the stories it contains has generated a lot of buzz.
The “Don’t Let Your Husband Pick Your Death Clothes” vignette, which was revealed by Haute Living, remembers Ripa’s first marriage to her “All My Children” co-star Mark Consuelos in 1997, when Michael, their son, was only six months old. Ripa was also a new mother at the time.
According to Ripa, she was having a private moment with Consuelos when the pain from an ovarian cyst burst forced her to pass out.
Her husband had clothed her when she woke up in the emergency room in a French-cut leotard in the style of the 1980s and a pair of red Manolo Blahnik shoes, which Ripa claimed made her appear like a “dime shop prostitute” as he munched on some snacks.
The blurry images on the television, the remains of my ovarian tormentor, and Mark cheerfully munching away catch my attention in various combinations. In her collection of true short stories, Ripa writes, “I think that although one of us is absolutely undeterred, I think that sex can be so terrible. “Look at him there, gleefully chowing down on the saltines and ordering a second apple juice. Mark might be in a movie theater or a spa. As opposed to that, I’m lying flat on my back pondering when the other two cysts will rupture.
“And here’s my husband, whom I dare say is always fashionable and well-groomed, yet in my hour of need, he dressed me like a dime store prostitute. To the extent that, while I was on the stretcher, I felt I was dreaming or having a nightmare, it is still perplexing to me to this day that he could only pick the best costume for the occasion for me. I had not realized that I had arrived.
On September 27, Ripa’s book is expected to be released.
